Welcome to Fox Class

The teachers in Year 1 Fox Class are Mrs. Snowden and Mrs. Barnard. We will help you with anything you need to know or any problems you may have in Year 1.  


Our class is named after the author Mem Fox. Merrion Frances "Mem" Fox, is an Australian writer of children's books. She lives in Adelaide, South Australia. Have you read any of her books?


In Fox Class, we love to read and ensure that all children have exposure to a wealth of engaging books from different authors. Books can take you any place that you can imagine and even to places that you can't! They give you a wonderful insight into other cultures, experiences, people and places without even leaving your seat. In Fox Class we encourage children to value and understand others and gain a greater understanding of the world around them through their wide reading experiences.

Term 1

This term we are learning about ourselves.  In Art, we will learn about the work of Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh and paint our own self portraits in these styles. In science, we will name the main body parts and explore our five senses. Please refer to the detailed curriculum information for Term 1 (see link below).


This term, PE is on Monday and Friday and children should come to school wearing their PE kit - dark blue / black plain shorts / jogging bottoms, plain white T-shirt / school jumper and trainers / daps. 


Please sign up for Google Classroom and GoRead (reading App) - any problems, please contact Mrs McCosh in the school office.  Home learning will be posted on Google Classroom every Friday and you will need to submit before the following Wednesday.  If you have any questions, please see me after school and I'll be happy to help!

Term 2

This term we'll begin with our Science unit of work about naming and describing materials - please refer to the related Knowledge Organiser. After that we'll start learning about The Great Fire of London, finding out about this significant event - please refer to the related Knowledge Organiser.  We'll learn about different celebrations in RE including birthdays, Christmas  (Christian) and Eid (Islamic).  In PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) - SCARF scheme of work, we will focus on how we are all different, celebrate our differences and also complete work on anti-bullying.  In PE this term we will complete unit 2 of REAL PE - social skills focus and also develop football skills (led by our Sports Coach from Up and Under).  Please refer to the Term 2 curriculum overview map and the related Knowledge Organisers.


Please not that PE will continue to be on Monday and Friday - come to school on these days in your PE kit - black / dark jogging bottoms / leggings, trainers and polo shirt (blue or white) / school jumper.  We will also continue to change all decodable reading books and picture (library) books every Friday but please bring the decodable reading book into school daily.


Term 3

This term our theme is based upon our local area - What is the geography of where I love? We will learn the continents and oceans of the world and recall the nations of the UK and their related capital cities. Also we'll learn about the physical and human features of Chippenham and compare to a coastal location.  In science we'll learn about animals - features of different animals and grouping. Our PE will be based upon REAL PE Cognitive skills and REAL Dance - PE continues to be on Monday and Friday each week. In PSHE (SCARF), we will focus on valuing differences and rights and responsibilities. In maths we will continue work on addition and subtraction but crossing the 10 boundary e.g. 7+5= (7+3=10, +2=12) 13-5= (13-3=10, -2=8)  and place value to 50 e.g. 45 has 4 tens and 5 ones or 40+5=45.  Please refer to the curriculum maps / Knowledge Organisers for detailed information.


Term 4

This term learning will be based around our history unit - What toys did children play with in the past? We will make a timeline of toys from Victorian times to the present day.  We will find out about the toys that our parents and grandparents played with. In English, our writing will be based upon the books Pinocchio and Grandad's island (following the Year 1 Write Stuff units).  In maths we will learn to compare and measure length, weight and capacity. Our SCARF (Personal, Social, Health and Emotional development) learning will focus around keeping ourselves safe. In Science, we will learn about the four seasons, related months and  weather - this will lead us nicely into learning about the signs of Spring and Easter celebrations.  Please refer to the Curriculum Map for Term 4 and relevant Knowledge Organisers.

Term 5

This term our theme is called 'Who do we like to be beside the seaside?'  In Geography, we will learn about the physical and human features we will find at a seaside location (Cornwall and Devon).  We will also compare this location with where we live, to identify similarities and differences. In DT, we will design and make a hand puppet to use in a Punch and Judy seaside show.  We start to learn how to sew using a running stitch.  Please refer to the knowledge organisers for Term 5 for these subjects.  In PE we will develop physical skills (REAL PE unit 5) and in PSHE (Personal, Social and Health education) we will focus on growing and changing. The children will continue daily reading and phonics - please support with phonics and reading at home as this makes such a difference to the progress that your child makes.


In English, our writing will be based around The Train Ride (book by June Crebbin) and The Sea Song (short film clip). Whole class reading will be based around the book The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch (by Ronda and David Armitage).  In maths the children will be introduced to multiplication and division (2s, 5s and 10s), fractions (halves and quarters) and position and direction (forwards, backwards, left, right etc...).  We will be very busy and have lots of fun!  Please refer to curriculum information for further details.


Term 6

In Term 6 our focus is 'What can we buy at the Garden Centre?'  In science, we will learn the names of a wider range of flowers and trees.  We will also name and label parts of a flower and tree. In art, the children will explore and learn the techniques of weaving and batik (wax resist on paper and then fabric). Our English focus will be on creating a leaflet to persuade people to visit a theme park and also we will read and write the story of Red Riding Hood. Our class reading book is Zog by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. In maths we will continue to revise place value to 100 (45 has 4 tens and 5 ones) and mental maths skills - addition and subtraction.  We will name coins and notes (money) and learn to tell the time o'clock and half past - so start referring to the time throughout the day now - they will prove very helpful!  Our SCARF lessons will continue to support the vital importance of following the school code and will prepare children for growth and changes.  Please refer to the curriculum information for Term 6 for further details.
