Learning

At Frogwell we aim to provide an exceptional education for all our children which is underpinned by our core values. We want children to flourish in a happy and caring environment whilst developing a love of learning so that they are able to unlock their potential as confident learners and responsible citizens. We believe that children are entitled to a curriculum that is broad and balanced and provides opportunities that raise aspirations and widen horizons. Our curriculum aims to go beyond what is required by the National Curriculum. We have designed a wide variety of learning opportunities that we aim for all children in our school to experience by the time they leave. These are listed in 'The Frogwell 20'

Early Years Foundation Stage

When children join our school in Reception class, we want them to develop as independent, motivated learners who are full of curiosity about the world around them. Within our fun, happy and secure environment, our children play and explore using the indoor and outdoor environment where they are encouraged to be active and develop creative and critical thinking.

Primary Curriculum (KS1 and KS2)

Our curriculum is rich in knowledge and has been designed with a clear progression in mind. This ensures that children are able build on their existing skills and knowledge so that they are able to know and remember more. Our curriculum is built around the objectives set out in the National Curriculum which cover the core subjects: English, Maths and Science, and the foundation subjects: Computing, History, Geography, Art and Design, Design Technology, Music, Physical Education, French, PSHE and Religious Education.

The children are taught reading, writing, phonics (KS1), spellings (KS2) and maths every day as these provide key skills that the children will need to access other areas of the curriculum. In addition, all classes have at least 2 PE lessons every week.

Some curriculum areas such as History, Geography, Art and Design and Design Technology are taught in termly projects, beginning with an enquiry question. Children are able to immerse themselves in a topic and learn the specific knowledge and skills relevant to each subject.

Complex Needs Resource Base

Within the Resource Base we offer an individualised curriculum for all children, linked to their Educational Health Care plan and advice from professionals involved with the children. The pupils are supported by a team of SEN-experienced teachers and teaching assistants, this enables the provision of a high level of support. The children access a “total-communication” approach to develop their communication skills and independence. Staff are experienced at using alternative augmentative communication systems including Makaton, Pecs, Widget and visual systems. All staff deliver personalised Speech and Language therapy, which is embedded across the school day. Where appropriate some children have opportunities to access mainstream integration sessions during the school week.
