Lewis (Year 4)

Welcome to Lewis Class

Teacher: Miss Bates

Teaching assistant: Mrs Manuel

Welcome to Term 3!

We hope you all had a lovely Christmas holidays! We are looking forward to another exciting and busy term of learning in Lewis Class.

In English, we will begin by exploring The Creature, a powerful picture book that raises awareness of plastic pollution in our oceans and the impact this has on wildlife. The children will be using the text to inspire their own newspaper report writing, with a focus on structure, language and presenting information clearly. Later in the term, we will move on to The Great Chocoplot, a humorous and imaginative story about children who believe that chocolate is being taken away forever. Through this, children will develop their narrative writing skills by creating imaginative stories, carefully developing characters, settings and exciting plot lines. Alongside this, our daily whole-class reading sessions will allow us to finish A Bear Called Paddington before moving on to The Accidental Prime Minister. Through shared reading, discussion and vocabulary exploration, children will continue to develop their comprehension skills and love of reading. In addition, our weekly Thursday afternoon library sessions will provide further opportunities for reading for pleasure.

In maths, our learning will focus on multiplication and division, alongside length and perimeter. Regular times tables practice will take place to help children build fluency and confidence, particularly in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check which will be taking place in June. Children will practice their times tables using TT Rockstars, during weekly sessions in the computer room every Tuesday morning.

Our science topic this term is states of Matter, where children will explore solids, liquids and gases through a range of practical and engaging experiments, helping them to develop a strong understanding of how materials change and behave. In history, we will be learning about how children’s lives have changed over time, comparing childhood in the past with life today. In art, children will explore still life through looking at how different artists create interesting compositions. They will then use these ideas to design and create their own still life artwork. In computing, we will explore repetition in games. The children will be applying the coding skills they learnt and developed last term to create their own repetitive games using Scratch. In RE, children will explore the question “How important is it for Jewish people to do what God asks them to do?”, and in French, they will learn vocabulary linked to the four seasons (Les Saisons). In PSHE, we will focus on Keeping ourselves Safe, alongside a strong emphasis on kindness and positive relationships. Through our Kindness Project and our Secret Angels initiative, children will be encouraged to show care, empathy and consideration for others, helping to create a supportive and respectful classroom environment.

Please see the attached curriculum map for more details as well as subject-specific knowledge organisers.

P.E lessons will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Mondays, children will work with a specialist coach to develop their netball skills, while Wednesdays will focus on gymnastics.
